Games: What games are you currently playing? [OT!]

Its not a failure, but we can call it unsuccessful. They make a $150 loss with each console sold thanks to the expensive componants they used. They only managed to make a profit during the month Halo 2 was released. Yes it sold fairly well, but they needed more popular titles like that to break even.

IRT Wiseman - Yeah, im surprised too. The only reason it managed to sustain flight in the market was because of Microsoft's strong financial backbone. Personally, i wouldnt recommend the console to anyone who still hasnt got a PS2; it has some really good titles, but nothing that i'd classify as a gaming masterpiece.

Yup, that's because they suck and didn't really design a console - they took a PC, tweaked the front architecture a bit, added a small number of propietary components to make it incompatible with standard PC hardware (gamepads, etc., so they can sell theirs and have an excuse to say it's not a PC), and modified Windows 2000 so that only the microkernel is loaded at boot, and the rest is statically linked to a game.

If they had really wanted to make a gaming console and saw this market as a real opportunity, not something to crush so we go back to Windows, they would have designed a real console with its own gaming-oriented architecture, as usual. You just can't make a 20 year old general purpose architecture cheap and suitable enough. Besides, they failed to understand the difference between American and Japanese style games; that's why the system's offer is uninteresting to traditional console gamers (mainly in Europe) and Asians.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend the system. For people looking for quality gaming, except FPSes, I'd recommend a PS2 - it's considerably less powerful, but has much better and many more games. For people looking for American-styled games, especially shoot anything games, as well as for people who want state of the art graphics, I'd recommend a new PC with a next-gen graphics accelerator.

I feel the Xbox has given Microsoft a steady standard for them to build on with 360. They're working on expanding online play, and they're addressing the Japanese gamers tastes, as well as aiming to make it more of a console. It could be good; im interested in it already thanks to Mist Walker's exclusive involvement, which couldnt be said for the original Xbox.

The reviews for that game are shockingly mixed. Could you tell me how it turns out, and whether it would be enjoyable for a newcomer to the series?

Sure. SO far it's about the same as 4, with some lame things changed for the better, IMO.
